SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGY
From its beginnings, Grupo Secacao crafted a vision of Corporate Social Responsibility. The sustainability of our business model is nourished by a culture of ethics whose main values are respect, responsibility, integrity, and excellence.
These values strengthen the performance of Grupo Secacao and guide the way we run our business through principles that strengthen our corporate citizenship.
An administrative model was created based on the definition of several priorities, and its main areas of focus are the following:
- Human Resource Management
- Social Management
- Environmental Management
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
The most important thing for us at Grupo Secacao is our people. We believe that we are only able to reach our goals and objectives because of the enthusiasm and effort of everyone who forms part of this organization.
Human resource management is in charge of training and developing our collaborators, and it is interested in their health and occupational safety.
In a four-year effort, all the collaborators of the company who hadn’t attained a primary or secondary education were encouraged and given the chance to do so. Two hundred and twenty-six (226) people reached the objective, obtaining a high level of satisfaction as well as personal and professional pride.
We identify self-improvement opportunities for our collaborators and evaluate their competencies, and we invest in their formation and training in an effort to guarantee the quality of our operations and the growth of our team and the Group itself.
We ensure compliance with our health and occupational safety norms to make sure that our collaborators are protected through safe work spaces.
One of our objectives is to develop policies, procedures, and work plans focused on the effective management of our operations’ environmental risks and impacts.
We seek to reduce our carbon footprint, promoting a responsible corporate culture when it comes to natural resources and their sustainable use.
We guarantee that Grupo Secacao’s activities have no adverse effects on either terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems and on either air or water quality.
We seek environmental sustainability by managing our activities sustainably, minimizing any impacts on biodiversity.
We are convinced that, if we develop our activities in an environmentally responsible way, renewable electric energy projects can have positive economic, social, and environmental impacts. For this reason, we are committed to the sustained improvement of our environmental performance, and to the environmental protection of our operations’ areas of influence.
This is the only way we can ensure that our projects promote sustainable development in Guatemala.
With the purpose of cementing our commitment to environmental protection, we follow a four-tier model that we implement progressively in all of our activities:
PREVENTION AND COMPLIANCE
This implies carrying out our activities responsibly when it comes to our neighboring communities and environment, preventing alterations to our surrounding areas as much as possible.
We fulfill all of our environmental promises, without exception, including any legal requirements required of us.
INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES
In accordance to our commitment to sustained improvement, we adopt standards and methods similar to those upheld by organizations renowned for their sustainable practices at a global level.
With this in mind, Grupo Secacao has implemented an Environmental Management System that follows ISO 14001-2015 guidelines, using them as reference when evaluating, controlling, and managing the International Finance Corporation’s Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines, as well as the International Hydropower Association’s Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol and other guides applicable to specific environmental fields.
Our activities allow considerable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. It is our intention to actively seek the formal recognition and commercialization of these reductions.
Our forestry projects were established in 2003 with three main objectives: to protect the watershed, create jobs, and allow for long-term timber use. Their reach has extended to 306 hectares of rubber plantations, 144 hectares of cardamom, and a reforested area that amounts to 674 hectares. Our agroforestry projects provide for approximately 116 jobs. Additionally, Grupo Secacao counts with 809 hectares of tropical forest, registered with the National Forestry Institute (INAB) as protected forest, helping preserve the region’s flora and fauna and increasing the watershed’s capacity. All of these projects have been carried out within INAB’s Forestry Incentives program, which has directly and indirectly supervised the establishment and adequate management of the plantations and protected areas.
